Rosberg X Racing was by far the top team in Extreme E since the inaugural season in 2021, but it will not join the series in the transition to Extreme H for 2025. On Friday, RXR confirmed it will close down after four years and two championships.

“Building RXR wasn’t just about racing; it was about creating a purpose-driven team that could make a real difference,” said team owner Nico Rosberg. “From our championship wins to our environmental and equality initiatives, we’ve accomplished so much together. While it’s bittersweet to close this chapter, I am proud of what we’ve achieved.”

With Johan Kristoffersson and Molly Taylor, RXR won thrice and the first Extreme E title on a tiebreaker over X44, ironically a duel of former Mercedes F1 teammates as Rosberg’s outfit defeated Lewis Hamilton’s. Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky replaced Taylor for 2022, where they won twice but X44 exacted revenge to win by five points.

2023, the final full season for Extreme E, was a duel between RXR and ACCIONA | Sainz. Although the latter drew first blood, an RXR hot streak that included sweeping the first Island X Prix and finishing no worse than second in the final three races propelled the Rosberg camp to a second title.

When the 2024 season was abandoned after four races, RXR sat third in points. Åhlin-Kottulinsky and Kristoffersson won the first race of the Desert X Prix weekend, which ended up being their only overall podium the rest of the way as they finished fourth in each of the remaining events. With X44 having shut down prior to 2024, RXR is the only XE team with multiple championships.

“RXR gave me the chance to push boundaries, race with purpose, and grow in ways I never imagined,” added Åhlin-Kottulinsky. “From our championship wins to our driven-by-purpose campaign to planting thousands of trees and inspiring kids, this journey has been unforgettable. I’ll also forever be grateful for the opportunity to learn, besides Johan, who is now a seven-time World Rallycross Champion. While I’ll miss the team, I’m excited to see where this next chapter takes me next.”

With Extreme E set to become the FIA Extreme H World Cup in 2025, some teams like SUN Minimeal Team and Carl Cox Motorsport have already expressed plans of following along. Of course, others like RXR will not.

“Winning two championships was an incredible achievement, but what stands out most is the impact we made beyond racing,” Kristoffersson offered. “This has been more than a racing team; it’s been a family, and I’m grateful for all the great times.”
