André Lotterer is one of top sports car racers today, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans thrice and two FIA World Endurance Championships, the latter including the latest Hypercar title for Porsche. Now that he’s technically out of a ride for 2025, could we interest him in trying the Dakar Rally?
Dakar might not exactly be Le Mans, but Lotterer seems up for it. In fact, he arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday with plans of following the rally. He arrived at the bivouac on Wednesday in time for Stage #4, which he followed from the air in a helicopter.
“Little dream of mine to see it and race it one day,” he remarked in an Instagram Story.
Given Dakar’s roots in France, crossover between it and endurance races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans was not uncommon during the former’s early years. Even Dakar founder Thierry Sabine finished third in class at Le Mans in 1975. Jacky Ickx has overall victories in both events.
Incidentally, Lotterer’s former WEC employers Audi and Rebellion Racing also have rally raid experience. The former won the 2024 Dakar before shutting down the rally division due to parts shortages and focusing on F1, while Rebellion currently has a partnership with Paul Spierings to compete in the Challenger class. Rebellion also fielded a Dakar entry for WEC veteran Romain Dumas until 2024.
Lotterer’s contract with Porsche expired after winning the 2024 Hypercar championship alongside Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor, ending an eight-year tenure with the marque that included three seasons in Formula E. He competed in the latter from 2017 to 2023.
As it stands though, sports cars remain his priority. In December, following his departure from Porsche, Lotterer signed with the new Genesis LMDh program for its debut in 2026. His focus for 2025 will thus be on developing the team’s car, though he has not revealed any specific racing plans for the year.
