Driving Ukraine, a British effort to donate medevac vehicles to Ukrainian troops and emergency services during the Russian invasion, has partnered with Silverstone Circuit ahead of its next wave of donations.
On January 23, 12 emergency vehicles including ambulances and pickup trucks will turn laps around the full circuit used for Formula One’s British Grand Prix. A camera crew will be on hand to record them as part of an upcoming film.
Those vehicles will then make the 1,300-mile trip across Europe to Ukraine with 28 volunteers and over £150,000 (USD$182,670) in aid for hospitals and stabilization points.
“It’s an incredible show of support, and for all the Ukrainians to see such a remarkable and historic organisation standing with them,” reads a statement from Driving Ukraine.
Driving Ukraine has been in operation since March 2022, shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion, with the goal of donating vehicles and supplies. Fynn Watt, a rallycross driver, leads the project alongside other volunteers from Oxfordshire in the UK to Ukraine.
The initiative has raised over £1 million with over 150 vehicles delivered.
Off-road vehicles, obviously built to withstand tougher terrain, are in high demand for Ukrainian military and emergency personnel to evacuate the wounded and navigate the frontlines. Last September, the Automobile Federation of Ukraine (Ukraine’s FIA club) partnered with Watt to raise money for a Pinzgauer 6×6 armored ambulance.
The Pinzgauer and Watt are featured in the upcoming documentary Bulletproof Angels, directed by Ivan Yasniy and focusing on frontline paramedics.
Various off-road competitors, especially those from the Baltics, have donated gear and pickup trucks to the AFU. Even tires from the Dakar Rally have been used on Ukrainian military trucks.
