After back-to-back Baja 1000 and Dakar Rally victories, the Polaris RZR Pro R Factory is now available for customers to buy and race themselves. 30 units have been produced for 2025, the quantity increasing each year depending on the amount of pre-orders it gets, and going for a starting MSRP of $139,999.
The customer model is identical to the Gen-2 RZR Pro R Factory that has been in use since 2024. It is produced on Polaris Engineering’s assembly line in Minnesota that’s used to build the MRZR for the military; when an order for the Pro R Factory is placed, the plant is converted from defense to racing before returning to its usual duties upon completion.
“The fact that a manufacturer is building an off-road race vehicle and is race ready as it rolls off the production line is pretty impressive,” RZR Factory Racing general manager Ryan Thomas told a media bullpen that included 131 Off-Road last Friday. “We get these cars straight off the assembly line. The cars come mostly race ready.”
Once produced by Polaris Engineering, it is taken to Scanlon Clarke Incorporated in California for upfitting. The customer can request changes for SCi to make such as to the communications and navigation systems before they make it to the end user.
Given very few are being made for the first year and that it is a race-prepared vehicle, it is reasonable to assume that buyers will want to enter it in desert races; as Thomas put it, “An off-road racer is not your average UTV customer.” Even then, production components are still heavily featured in the Pro R Factory, which “lowers the bar” for those who want to get into the sport.
Although the Pro R Factory is used at Dakar, the customer model is not compliant with FIA rally raid rules so buyers can only use it in American desert racing like SCORE and BITD. The rally version, which has differences like extra body paneling and no intrusion bar, won’t be legal at all by 2026 when the FIA introduces new SSV class regulations, though existing cars will be grandfathered in until 2028.
RFR technical director Alex Scheuerell noted that “we’re working on a separate package for FIA customers and international customers as soon as possible.”
Two engines will be available: a 255-horsepower ProStar Fury HO 2.0 engine that is intended for racing (and thus must use race fuel), and a 225-hp ProStar Fury that relies on octane 91 fuel. The engines should last as long as the race model: besides being the same kind used by RZR Factory Racing, Polaris had pulled engine data from the Vegas to Reno (a race that Scheuerell said is “most damaging to engines”) and simulated it ten-fold to test the durability with ideal results; the actual racing engines were then used at the Baja 400 and Baja 1000 with only slight maintenance done. Regardless of the engine, it is coupled with a rear-mounted radiator, an integrated transmission oil cooler, and dual 500W fans.
It uses race-spec Max Link suspension, FOX Live Valve X2 shocks, and a DYNAMIX DV semi-active system for shock absorption. The brakes come from Alcon with adjustable in-cab bias. BFGoodrich provided 35-inch KR2 tires that go on Method 407 bead-grip wheels. Aero Tec Laboratories, who builds fuel cells for F1, designed a 130-liter cell for the Pro R Factory. Four lights, one on each corner of the vehicle, come from Rigid Industries.
A spare tire carrier is integrated into the rear bumper, but bolted in and thus removable. It also has a toolbox for spare parts like the radius rod and jack mounts.
Internally, the car has a carbon Kevlar seat from Sparco and steering wheel and a fully integrated MoTeC data logger. There is also a semi-active sway bar technology that is optional. If it catches fire, there is an FIA-approved fire suppression system with four handheld extinguishers.
“The RZR Pro R Factory represents the pinnacle of Polaris’ off-road innovation, offering off-road racers and teams a unique opportunity to own a purpose-built machine designed to win,” commented Polaris president Reid Wilson. “Since its debut, we’ve received incredible interest and demand for the vehicle from other teams, fueled by its unmatched track record. By making this vehicle available, we’re empowering more teams to elevate competition and set a new standard for off-road racing, further reinforcing Polaris’ leadership in the industry.”
