Chad Hall will race the new Chevrolet Silverado EV ZR2 concept truck at this weekend’s Mint 400 in the EV Open Production class. The truck was unveiled on Wednesday.

As the name suggests, it is based on the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 and Colorado ZR2 pickups. Hall, being a Chevrolet factory partner, races both to help develop and test parts before they’re introduced to the production models.

“Working with the Chevy engineers is always a good day at the office,” Hall explained. “What we learn from racing is applied to vehicles consumers can buy. An off-road race like the Mint 400 is equivalent to a lifetime of vehicle wear and tear.”

98% of the truck’s parts are from the OEM. Multimatic Adaptive Spool Valve dampers are built into it, providing over 13 inches of front and rear wheel travel, along with locking differentials and underbody skid protection. The electric engine is capable of 1,100 horsepower with 11,500 pound-feet of torque.

Although a concept vehicle, the EV ZR2 will be used to develop the 2026 Silverado EV Trail Boss. The EV version is relatively similar to its gas-based counterpart, using the same 35-inch tires, 18-inch wheels, and lift kit.

“There is no better proving ground to test the limits of our vehicles than competitive racing,” added Chevrolet VP Scott Bell. “The Silverado EV ZR2 race truck concept, which uses 98% GM production parts, showcases some of the best of Chevrolet to produce a beyond-capable pickup to tackle a challenging race of the Mint 400’s magnitude.”

The EV ZR2 will not be the only electric vehicle in the field. A Rivian R1T is competing in the EV Production class under the Off Grid Racing banner, piloted by Nick Paris and Jordan Sellers.

Hall won the 2024 Mint’s Stock Production Truck Mini/Mid-Size category in his Colorado ZR2, which he followed up with a 34th in the Unlimited Race with a Spec truck.

“Stock trucks are fun. They just don’t go quite as fast,” Hall remarked after finishing the Limited Race.

The 2025 Limited Race and the EV ZR2’s debut will be on Friday. The next day, Hall will return to his Spec truck for the Unlimited Race.
