Dalton Shirey arrived at the finish of the Mint 400’s Motorcycle Race looking like he had prevented Preston Campbell from notching a second straight victory. Campbell ultimately got the last laugh.

Shirey initially defeated Campbell by three minutes for what would have been his fourth Mint victory. Save for what Campbell called a “little hiccup, a little confusion” early on, he and Sam Pretscherer had a solid run and avoided trouble. However, the hiccup and confusion turned out to be the #P46 Husqvarna’s undoing as they received a time penalty of 11:48 for course cutting.

Multiple teams got penalized for the same reason, which stemmed from a poorly marked course section between Race Miles 41 and 44. The signage was corrected after the first lap, though some riders made the same mistake soon after.

Campbell and his partner Ricky Brabec also got 51 seconds added to their time, though nowhere near as bad as what their rivals received. Thus, the win went to the #P3 Honda CRF450X instead. It is Campbell’s second win in as many years, while Brabec notched his third after previously claiming the 2019 edition.

“Passing some wild lappers out there was quite a battle, but same course more or less as last year so it it was really rough out there. I think I just called it. This is probably my last time on a motorcycle at the Mint 400,” Brabec commented. The two-time Dakar Rally winner has been increasing his four-wheeled racing as of late, including winning the 2024 Limited Race in Pro UTV NA alongside W2RC teammate Skyler Howes.

The #P3 and #P46 left the field in their dust and were the only bikes to set times below eight hours. Third-placed Jarett Megla and his #P22 finished nearly 43 and a half minutes back as he and Nic Colangeli’s #P15 set sub-nine hour times.

Big Iron, a stable of disabled combat veterans with prosthetic legs, finished tenth in Over 30 Sportsman. Jesse Williamson lost both the rear bib mousse and the prosthesis on his left leg during his stint, the latter happening while he was going 65 to 70 miles per hour. Teammate Daniel Stoner and BITD rider Nick Lake got the former replaced when he pitted, while a track worker recovered the leg and returned it to him once he was done.

Arctic Leopard, an electric motorcycle company that had been dabbling in rally raids like Dakar and the Africa Eco Race since 2024, made its Mint 400 debut with three E-X800 bikes. Lead riders Travis Console, Deegan Burdine, and Sonie Shoemaker and their teammates completed two laps without issue, finishing together within a minute of each other.

While electric bikes are (probably) a step into the future, two Sportsman classes went in the opposite extreme. Taylor Baker won the 1975–1982 category on his 1981 Yamaha YZ465 ahead of Sean Tuite’s 1978 Husky by 29 minutes, while Victor Borg’s 1994 Honda had an hour and 15 minutes on Jacob Mace’s 1994 Husaberg for the 1983–1995 division.

Stunt rider Jeff Brewer won in the Harley-Davidson Sportster-only Hooligan Sportsman class. Josh McDonald, who finished second by 10:46, described the race as “a lot going on” and “lots of cool stuff,” but also filled with sandy whoops and he would be content with “not seeing one of those again for a while.”

Brewer remarked he had “only ridden this bike a couple times. We raced the Biltwell (100) last year, this is our second desert race ever. Just stoked to be here. It was sick the whole time.”
