Adrien Van Beveren is on the mend after undergoing wrist surgery last week. While recovery will leave him sidelined for a while, it should have little impact on his World Rally-Raid Championship pursuit as the next race isn’t until September and he expects to be good to go by then.
Van Beveren explained on Sunday that he had crashed in hard-packed terrain a few weeks before the South African Safari Rally, “resulting (in) some damage on my wrist ligaments.”
Despite the injury, he elected to race South Africa anyway. Even with his condition, Van Beveren finished second in Stages 1 and 4 and only missed the overall podium because his roadbook tablet glitched out on the final day. He settled for fourth, just five minutes off Honda teammate Ricky Brabec for third.
“I managed to ride like that in South Africa but it wasn’t ideal,” Van Beveren said. “So I went on a surgery some days ago to fix it good. I will be out of the bike some weeks but the plan is to be back before the next world championship round in Portugal.”
Fortunately, he’ll have the entire summer to heal up. The BP Ultimate Rally-Raid Portugal, the fourth and penultimate race of the season, is scheduled for September 22–28.
After three races, Van Beveren is fourth in the RallyGP standings and 40 points back of leader Daniel Sanders. He began the season with a third at the Dakar Rally followed by fifth in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge.
