V.E.T.T.S. In Motorsports is converting a Flyer 60 light strike vehicle into a pre-runner. Nicknamed the Flyer Prerunner, it will be used for desert driving as well as to help train veterans for the automotive and racing industries.
VETTS acquired the car from fellow veteran-led off-road nonprofit Warfighter Made. The Flyer 60 is an LSV that’s in essence a smaller Flyer 72; unlike its larger counterpart, the 60 never earned a contract with the United States military until Flyer Defense introduced a reworked version called the Flyer 60-6 in February.
In a social media post on Saturday, VETTS explained:
Desert racing often lacks structured support—no fixed pit stops, no guaranteed backup. That’s why we’re building a dependable, purpose-built vehicle that can:
- Prerun Courses: Preview race routes and mark GPS waypoints for navigation, fuel stops, and parts staging.
- Race Support & Recovery: Access remote, off-road pit locations and perform recovery operations if a vehicle breaks down or if a vet needs urgent assistance—especially critical for those with disabilities.
- Training Platform: Offer a stable, long-term vehicle that vets can learn on—building skills in driving, maintenance, fabrication, and modification of race-style vehicles.
This is more than a race support rig—it’s a rolling classroom, a lifeline, and a mission vehicle all in one.
VETTS—an acronym for “Veteran Empowerment Through Team Support”—was founded by retired Marine and off-road racer John McMurrin, who also founded the Veterans Racing Alliance. Organizations like those two and Warfighter Made seek to provide veterans with another avenue for therapy and assistance in transitioning back to civilian life via off-road racing.
While mainly rooted in desert racing (most recently assisting Dustin Ashe-Everest at the Baja Nevada The Long Way, where he finished third in Ironman Pro), the group also supports veterans competing in short course.
Warfighter Made also uses Flyer Defense’s cars as race vehicles, with their Flyer 22 LSV having won the VIntage Military class at the Mint 400 for the past four years.
