The Can-Am Maverick R Max and Outlander XT 1000R are among the 2025 recipients of the Red Dot Design Award, given annually to the best designed products and brands. Their creator BRP Inc. was also named the Design Team of the Year for 2025, the first Canadian group to receive the honor, which they accepted at a ceremony in Essen on Tuesday.
The Maverick R Max is a variant of the Maverick R, which has proven to be one of the most powerful UTVs on the market for recreational use and racing. It’s longer than the base model at 175 inches to the latter’s 138.7 in., taller by seven-tenths of an inch at 68.4 in., and heavier as it weighs in at 2,610 pounds when dry compared to the regular 2,150 lbs. The Max also has a wider wheelbase of 142.5 inches and larger wheels and tires of 16 and 32 inches, respectively.
Otherwise, both cars use the same 999cc Rotax engine and offer the same performance.
It is the sixth Red Dot Design Award for the Maverick family and second in a row for the Maverick R specifically. The Maverick X3 and Trail each got an award in 2018, followed by the Sport Max and XRS in 2019. Five years later, the base Maverick R won a 2024 Red Dot for reasons like its “distinctive and functionally optimised design”.
The jury gave the following explanation for selecting the Maverick:
The Can-Am Maverick R MAX impresses with a dynamically shaped exterior structure that visualises power, while the clearly designed interior conveys a sense of security and inspires confidence in the vehicle.
On the quad side, the Outlander XT 1000R is one of two Outlander XT models alongside the 850. Like with the Maverick R versus the Max, the XTs are longer at 88.4 inches to 84 in. and heavier at 975 pounds when dry (compared to 851 lb). The 1000R’s Rotax engine emits 101 horsepower compared to the base 82 hp, and it also has a sway bar whereas the XT 50 does not.
The Outlander now has five Red Dots. The original model won in 2012 followed by the six-wheeler in 2014, the Outlander L in 2015, and the Outlander Pro in 2024.
The jury explained:
The Can-Am Outlander XT 850/1000R appeals with its strikingly designed front end, which indicates the off-road capability of the vehicle and conveys robustness and strength.
BRP also received Red Dot Awards for the three-wheeled Can-Am Canyon Redrock, the Can-Am Origin dual-sport electric bike, and the Can-Am Pulse electric motorcycle. In total, BRP Inc. has won 61 Red Dots.
“These five new Red Dot awards, and this incredible recognition, are, above all, a testament to our people,” BRP chief design officer Denys Lapointe stated. “Designing paradigm shifting products takes more than creativity; it takes trust, collaboration, and an environment where ideas can thrive. While our cutting-edge facilities create the right conditions, it’s the determination to constantly challenge conventions and elevate each other’s ideas that makes this team’s members exceptional.
“After 40 years at BRP, I have the privilege of working alongside some of the best designers in the world and I’m more energized than ever by what we’re building together.”
