The trucks will have some company when they qualify for SCORE races. On Monday, the sanctioning body announced Class 1 has also been added to the qualifying program starting with the Baja 400.

All five qualifying categories (Trophy Truck, Trophy Truck Spec, Trophy Truck Legends, Trophy Truck 2WD, Class 1) will also be grouped into a single starting order, as opposed to when they started by class like in the past. For example, a Trophy Truck Spec can now be the first truck on course followed by a regular Trophy Truck and then a Class 1 if those three are the fastest qualifiers overall. Each car will start one minute apart.

“We aim for SCORE International to always innovate and embrace the challenge of racing in the deserts of the Baja California Peninsula, emphasizing that Class 1 has been a part of this sport and organization for over five decades,” explained SCORE president Abelardo Grijavla. “This way, they will have better opportunities to compete for the overall win in each of our races, which I think is fantastic.”

Those who don’t qualify will start behind the qualifiers. Unlike those who participate, non-qualifiers will be grouped by class in the following order: Trophy Truck, TT 2WD, TT Legends, Class 1, and TT Spec. These vehicles will start 30 seconds apart.

Baja 400 qualifying will take place on September 11, two days before racing. For this year’s 400, teams that didn’t race the Baja 500 in June can still qualify, though Baja 1000 qualifying will be restricted to those who raced the 400.

Toby Price’s Trophy Truck was the fastest overall qualifier at the 2024 Baja 500.
