Extreme H will rock with Yokohama Tire for the inaugural season, making the switch after using Continental Tire during its electric existence.
Yokohama will supply a prototype tire based on the GEOLANDR X-AT off-road tire, more durable to account for the heavier Pioneer 25 and rougher environment. 38% of the tire will be made from renewable and recycled raw materials.
The tire will make its debut at the Extreme E Final Lap on October 4–5.
“We are honored to partner with Extreme H at this landmark moment in motorsport history,” said Yokohama exec Takayoshi Omae. “For this world’s first hydrogen racing event, we will supply a prototype of our GEOLANDAR X-AT. The prototype also features renewable and recycled raw materials.
“We see participation in Extreme H as part of our efforts to maximize the sales ratio of high-value-added products in our consumer tire lineup and to contribute to the realization of a more sustainable world through our cutting-edge technologies and high-performance products.”
Continental had previously been the official tire supplier for Extreme E throughout all four seasons. As part of the partnership, Continental also lent its name to the Continental Traction Challenge that awarded bonus points for the fastest car through a certain sector on the track.
Like the Yokohama prototype, Continental’s CrossContact tire was made using recycled materials. In the CrossContact’s case, it was derived from old PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles, polyester yarn, and silica extracted from rice husk ash.
With Yokohama taking over as tire maker, the GEOLANDAR X-AT prototype will debut on the ODYSSEY 21 at the Final Lap in Saudi Arabia.
“We are delighted to welcome Yokohama to the Extreme H family,” series managing director Ali Russell commented. “As we break new ground in hydrogen motorsport, having a tire partner with a proven track record of high performance and sustainability is critical. Yokohama’s innovation and global reputation make them an ideal collaborator as we push the boundaries of what’s possible, both on and off the track.”
