The first race for the Extreme H World Cup will be revealed on Wednesday, September 17. Until then, the series announced a new multi-year contract with the FIA on Tuesday.

“Signing this multi-year agreement with the FIA is a landmark moment for Extreme H and the future of hydrogen racing,” said series head Alejandro Agag. “It reinforces our mission to push the boundaries of sustainable motor sport and provide a global showcase for clean mobility solutions and gender equality on the track.”

Extreme H is the successor to Extreme E, whose fourth season last year was cut short to focus on developing its hyrogen-based sequel. However, XE will return for a swan song in Saudi Arabia on October 4–5.

While Extreme H has yet to race, the FIA awarded it World Cup status in December after satisfying criteria like a calendar on three different continents. Extreme E, on the otehr hand, was defined as an FIA International Series.

If the series goes well in its inaugural season, the FIA wouldn’t rule out a promotion to World Championship. Such a tier is currently held by Formula One, Formula E, the Karting World Championship, World Endurance Championship, World Rally Championship, World Rallycross Championship, and World Rally-Raid Championship. Formula E and World RX vehicles also use alternative power sources, though the latter features ICE as well.

“The FIA is committed to supporting competitions that set new benchmarks for sustainability, innovation, and equality,” offered FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. “This agreement for the FIA Extreme H World Cup demonstrates our belief in hydrogen’s potential as a key part of motorsport’s evolution. Together, we are laying the groundwork for a more sustainable future for our sport and the wider industry.”
