Extreme E’s race format was one of the more unusual in motorsports, and its hydrogen-based successor is keen on doing the same. On Friday, Extreme H unveiled the three-day race weekend format that will debut on October 9–11 in Qiddiya.
Each day, teams will earn points toward a “World Cup Pool”. It operates the same as Extreme E’s Intermediate Classification, with the points being used to set the starting order for the final race.
The first day will begin with qualifying, with each driver getting a flying single lap at speed. The results for both drivers on a team are then added up to set the lineup for two rounds of heat races. Two World Cup Pool points are awarded to the team with the fastest time through the Super Sector (Extreme H’s version of the XE-era Continental Traction Challenge).
Day 2 will use a knockout bracket of 16 races with head-to-head races. By the end, there will be four cars left who take part in the semi-final and then the final. Two more WCP points are given to the team with the best combined time.
Finally, Day 3 will have two rounds of four-car races. Wherever one finishes earns them points in the World Cup Pool, which is then used to set the start order for the final eight-car race.
“Extreme H is not only pioneering hydrogen-powered racing, but also reimagining what motorsport can look like,” said series boss Alejandro Agag. “This multi-discipline format is designed to showcase the versatility of our drivers, and push teams, and the Pioneer 25 hydrogen racing car, to their limits, and deliver a truly spectacular show for fans worldwide. To crown our first FIA World Cup champion with an eight-car Finale will be a landmark moment for everyone to build towards.”
