Johnny Greaves might by turning 60 next season, but the old man still has gas in the tank.
His absence from Championship Off-Road’s season finale in Glen Helen last month sparked some rumors about his future, especially after he missed Bark River due to injury. On Saturday, he clarified his no-show for Glen Helen was because of a sponsor withdrawal and that he doesn’t plan on retiring for a while.
“No, I’m not quitting anytime soon, probably two more years,” Greaves quipped.
“We had a sponsor that pulled out midseason that’s been with us for a long time. They’ve been great. They had some business troubles so things had to change on their end, but it set us back budget-wise. We had to make the decision to thin things out for that last race at Glen Helen and did what we did to make it happen.”
2025 was a rather frustrating campaign for Greaves. He recorded six podiums but failed to win a race, his second winless season in the past three years. A hard landing at ERX resulted in a broken sternum that sidelined him for Dirt City; he had also missed the start of 2023 with broken ribs.
Of course, losing the sponsor for reasons out of either party’s control added insult to his literal injury. If there was a silver lining, it certainly was that his son CJ was able to enjoy a milestone year as he hit 200 short course wins and scored his tenth Pro 4 title.
“Unfortunate I couldn’t be there. I wanted to be there so bad,” the older Greaves continued. “Champ did a great job. I’ll definitely be there next year and hope to see you guys all there.
“Like I said, as far as me quitting, ain’t happening yet. See you next year.”
