Qiddiya hosted the Extreme E Final Lap over the weekend, a pair of races to formally conclude the electric series’ existence before transitioning to Extreme H a week later.
The eight participating teams were a mix of returning outfits and newcomers, all dusting off the Spark Odyssey 21 one final time. Kristoffersson Motorsport, a spiritual successor to twice champion Rosberg X Racing, delivered what many had been used to in the form of a Johan Kristoffersson–Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky victory on Saturday. Team Hansen’s Andreas Bakkerud and Catie Munnings turned off the XE lights on Sunday.
After qualifying for the Saturday Grand Final, KMS battled with ACCIONA | Sainz early on. The latter, competing in their final race weekend before their assets are transferred to ZEROID QEV Motorsport, had their race end with right rear suspension damage when Laia Sanz collided with Kristoffersson. KMS dominated the rest of the race.
However, KMS’ hopes of sweeping the weekend were dashed when Åhlin-Kottulinsky and Hedda Hosås of ally Team EVEN crashed. This left the Grand Final as a duel between Hansen and Jameel Motorsport, one that the former won.
“It feels really emotional to end Extreme E on such a high,” said Munnings. It is her first XE win since the 2021 Arctic X Prix. “I’ve been a part of this championship since day one, and to take a win in the final-ever round, together with the Hansens who I consider family, is something I’ll never forget.
“The Final had everything. Chaos, pressure, and those moments where you just have to trust your instincts: braking at the start of the race to avoid Mikaela and Hedda was definitely one of those moments. I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved together this weekend in such a short time, and I can’t wait to take on the FIA Extreme H World Cup next week with this team.”
While coming up short of winning, Jameel still had a solid weekend despite sudden developments. Molly Taylor was injured in a rollover on Saturday that pressed reserve driver Claire Schönborn into action, and she and Kevin Hansen won that day’s Redemption Race.
JBX claimed the Sunday Redemption Race over Carl Cox Motorsport, whose drivers were left reeling by penalties in their heats.
“Unfortunately, the provided evidences, such as telemetry data, onboards, inconsistency of decisions on same situations in the past, that were disproving the reasons for the penalty, have been reviewed, approved but surprisingly did not lead to a cancellation of the penalty,” Timo Scheider commented. “The reasons for that remain unclear.”
