Rally raid pioneers Citroën ZX Rallye Raid 01 and Jules II Proto were unable to find a buyer during Saturday’s Aguttes Auction & Motion in Brussels.
While the ZX Rally Raid line went on to win the Dakar Rally four times, the car that went up for auction was the very first unit produced by Citroën in 1990. It was never raced since it’s basically a prototype and the manufacturer subsequently built more versions intended for racing use.
ZX 01 left Citroën’s collection in 2014 and went into private ownership.
The Jules II is a six-wheeled car that Thierry de Montcorgé built and raced in the 1984 Paris–Dakar, though it didn’t finish. As the name suggests, it was the sequel to the “Jules” Rolls-Royce which de Montcorgé entered into the 1981 edition.
After 1984, Jules II was abandoned and cycled through various owners before ending up in Pieter Peerlings’ collection. Following restoration, it competed in April’s Morocco Desert Challenge but retired with a broken control arm.
The ZX and Jules II were respectively the 57th and 58th vehicles of 107 total that were up for auction at the Autoworld museum in Belgium. Both had the same estimated price range between €350 and €450 thousand. Alas, neither found a new owner.
Besides the ZX and Jules, the only car optimized for off-road racing in the pool was a 2011 Ford Fiesta RS WRC that also went unsold. The Fiesta won the 2011 Rally Sweden with Mikko Hirvonen before being used by Elfyn Evans and even MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi. It also failed to be sold.
