After a week of work, Ralliart has completed restoration of Patrick Zaniroli’s Mitsubishi Pajero Evoution that won the 1985 Paris–Dakar Rally. It will be on display at the Japan Mobility Show from October 31 to November 9.

The project began in mid-October, with the goal of restoring the Pajero to how it looked when it crossed the finish in Dakar on January 22, 1985. The engine, gearbox, and suspension were fully overhauled.

For the body, Ralliart mostly applied some touch-ups to address wear from aging. This included going as far as to recreate the stylish, handwriting-like names of Zaniroli and navigator Jean da Silva on the front quarter panels.

“We preserved as much of the original as possible,” the team stated.

Zaniroli led a Pajero 1–2 finish at the 1985 Dakar with teammate Andrew Cowan right behind. It was the first overall win for a Japanese car.

A Frenchman who raced Dakar until 1990, Zaniroli has previously visited Japan to see his old Pajero again. He also gave his blessing to Ralliart for the restoration.

The Japan Mobility Show, held every two years and formerly known as the Tokyo Mobility Show, will take place at Tokyo Big Sight in Odaiba.
