After a decade away, Scion is back. Well, kind of.

At SEMA, Toyota unveiled a UTV called the Scion 01 Concept. As the name suggests, it is only a concept car rather than an actual vehicle that can be bought or driven. Still, it technically marks Toyota’s first time dipping their feet into the UTV world.

“The Scion 01 Concept is about taking what we do best at Toyota and blending it with the passions that drive us,” Don Federico, chief engineer and vice president of vehicle performance development, stated. “It’s the intersection of advanced performance and our deep enthusiasm for adventure. By bringing those worlds together in a side-by-side format, we’re exploring how Toyota performance can live in entirely new spaces, and inspire a new generation of enthusiasts to get out and go.”

Scion was a Toyota brand of compact cars intended to appeal to younger drivers. However, it died out in 2016 as Toyota figured their own name did the intended job just fine.

The 01 Concept has a turbocharged, four-cylinder hybrid engine pulled from Toyota’s pickup trucks and capable of 300 horsepower. Its rollcage is legal for both FIA rallies and SCORE desert races, meaning an actual version could probably compete in the former’s Challenger or SSV classes. Other components also draw inspiration from Toyota’s usual vehicles like the driveline, suspension, and brakes.

The concept car was created by Calty Design Research, a Toyota design studio chiefly based in California.

While Toyota currently does not offer a UTV, it still has a prominent off-road presence via its other vehicles like the Hilux and Land Cruiser.
