In tandem with longtime partner Hellgeth Engineering, Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks have developed what they call the “most powerful off-road Unimog to date”. A “luxury Unimog”, if you will, was unveiled on Tuesdya as a show car to commemorate the line’s 80-year anniversary in 2026.
It is based on a double-cab Unimog U 4023, but the usual four-cylinder engine was replaced by a six-cylinder MB OM 936 unit that produces 300 horsepower. Other changes include digital cameras and monitors that replace the usual mirrors, leather interior, and aluminum beadlock wheels.
The body is inspired by SUVs.
“With the luxury Unimog show car, we have realized our vision of combining the legendary robustness and off-road capability of the Unimog with an entirely new standard of comfort and engineering skills,” said MB Special Trucks CEO Franziska Cusumano. “This Unimog is a statement of innovation and passion.”
Hellgeth Engineering is Mercedes-Benz’s conversion partner, meaning they specialize in converting vehicles depending on client demand. Run by brothers Jürgen and Andreas Hellgeth, they work with a variety of vehicles but in particular are well-versed in Unimog.
The build also comes on the heels of the Hellgeths competing in the Rallye du Maroc with a Unimog U 4030. With Jürgen driving, they finished fourth in Open. The brothers also ran the Rallye Breslau in June, winning the Truck Small class.
