Ákos Varga, the first Hungarian to finish the Dakar Rally on a motorcycle, died Wednesday evening in a traffic accident in Győr. He was 52 years old.
According to a police report given to Blikk, Varga had been riding a motorcycle on Szent István Road at roughly 6:10 PM when an Audi Q5 changed lanes at the intersection between Szent István and Csipkegyári Road. The Audi collided with Varga, who was riding responsibly, and pushed him into a pole. He died at the scene.
Nicknamed “Alma”, Varga competed in the Dakar Rally in 2005 and 2006. Racing a KTM 660 Rally, he impressed in his debut with a 27th-place finish, including an eighth in Stage 14. The following year, riding under the MOL Dakar Team banner, he finished 60th overall for bikes.
He was a multi-time enduro champion who competed in events like Red Bull Romaniacs, where he prevented a sweep by five-time Dakar winner Cyril Despres at the 2005 edition, and Erzbergrodeo. Varga had also represented Hungary at the FIM International Six Days Enduro.
Varga was the founder of Alma Motor, a KTM motorcycle dealer in Győr.
