The Africa Eco Race has long started in Europe before crossing into Africa for racing. While the 2026 edition will have operations north of the Mediterranean as well, the official start has been moved to Tangier in Morocco.

Straddling the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, Tangier is a port city in northern Morocco. It is often used as the landing port for AER competitors after scrutineering in Europe, and was also the host of the first stage in 2025.

Southern France will continue to host pre-checks and vehicle boarding on January 20–21, though unlike in previous years won’t be where the race start is. At the 2025 edition, the rally formally began in Monaco after technical inspection but racing itself did not happen until arrival in Africa.

Vehicles will arrive at the Tanger Med port on January 23, followed by three days of administrative and technical inspection. January 25 will see the formal start in Tangier.

Racing begins January 26 with Stage 1, then runs through February 7 and finishes in Dakar.

“A strategic crossroads between Europe and Africa, Tangier has always been a place of transit, exchange, and inspiration,” reads a statement from the organizers. “Its port, cosmopolitan heritage, and vibrant energy make it a natural gateway to Africa—perfectly aligned with the values of the Ariac Eco Race: openness, boldness, commitment, and pushing one’s limits.

“The choice of Tangier is no coincidence. For several years, a strong partnership has linked the city to the Africa Eco Race organisation. This relationship, based on mutual respect and shared goals, now reaches a new milestone with this major symbolic start from a long-time partner region.”

The route has not been released, though organizers state it will be “redesigned” with “many exciting updates”.
