Citroën ZX Rallye Raid chassis 01, the very first prototype built, will be part of Aguttes on Wheels’ auction in Brussels on October 11. Aguttes estimates it to sell for €350–450,000.
The ZX Rallye Raid was Citroën’s return to the Dakar Rally after sister company Peugeot ended their rally raid program. Built in 1990 and originally painted white, the ZX chassis 01 was the first unit made but ultimately never used in competition as the company produced more race-ready versions.
It would become one of the premier rally raiders of the ’90s and a formidable rival to the Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution. The ZX won the Dakar Rally four times with Ari Vatanen (1991) and Pierre Lartigue (1994 to 1996) as well as the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies every year from 1993 to 1997 with the same drivers.
In 2014, Citroën began to sell some of its old and unused collections including ZX chassis 01. It was eventually sold to a private collector and restored.
Vatanen’s ZX EVO 1, designated as Chassis 05, was put up by Broad Arrow Auctions at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este Auction in May but wasn’t sold. Aguttes previously auctioned off an EVO 5 with which Hubert Auriol finished second in the 1994 Dakar and an EVO 3 that Vatanen drove to victory at the 1995 Atlas Rally; the former went for €420,300.
Aguttes’ auction will be held at the Autoworld museum in Brussels.
“Overhauled and still doted with its original 2.0-ltr engine, the same type that powered the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, this car is in incredible condition, as it has never been raced,” said Aguttes. “Fully registered in France with a carte grise done when it belonged to Citroën, this car is a true opportunity not to be missed.”
