Legacy Motor Club raised eyebrows when the NASCAR team expanded into Extreme E in 2024. For now, however, those two race weekends they ran will be their only times trying out off-road racing.

Dominik Wilde, a longtime reporter on the Extreme series for RACER, commentd via Discord that Legacy MC will not be part of the inaugural Extreme H lineup. When he spoke to Jimmie Johnson at Daytona, he was told the team was “approached too late for them to put the thing together”.

Johnson is a seven-time Cup Series champion who became part owner of Legacy MC, the successor to Richard Petty Motorsports, in 2022. Ahead of 2024, he decided to open an Extreme E arm with himself as one of the drivers, but the ultimately shortened season and his own obligations running the team got in the way.

With the 2024 XE calendar cut to just two rounds before beginning the transition to Extreme H, the team’s #84 Odyssey 21 ultimately ran just two race weekends. Gray Leadbetter was one of their drivers for both, sharing the ride with Travis Pastrana at the Desert X Prix and Patrick O’Donovan at the Hydro X Prix. Johnson would have taken over after that.

At the time of the season’s cancellation, Legacy MC sat sixth in points. They qualified for the Grand Final once in four tries at the first Hydro X Prix, finishing fifth.

While mainly known for his stock car career, Johnson has been interested in returning to his off-road roots since retiring from full-time competition. Besides the short-lived XE operation, he was reportedly set to drive a Pro 4 in Championship Off-Road for 2025 but ultimately didn’t enter any races. He also dabbled in ice racing at the International Concours of Elegance in Switzerland in February.

Leadbetter has since joined ZEROID QEV Motorsport for the first Extreme H race later in October.

With no Extreme H to worry about, Legacy MC’s focus is on the closing stretch of the 2025 Cup Series season. Erik Jones sits 24th in points while John Hunter Nemechek is 26th; Johnson has also done two races in a third car, finishing fifth at the season-opening Daytona 500.
