Rather than the usual purple-white-blue look, WRC2 driver Fabio Schwarz’s Toyota Yaris will sport the iconic TRD yellow-orange-red on white look made famous by Ivan Stewart.

A 2006 Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee, “Ironman” Stewart is one of the greatest drivers in the sport’s history with achievements in races as long as the Baja 1000 to those as short as Mickey Thompson’s stadium trucks. He was the first Toyota driver to win the 1000, one of three victories at the legendary event alongside 17 Baja 500s and four SCORE titles. Stewart also recorded a series-high 17 victories in MTEG, lifting Toyota to 11 manufacturers’ titles there.

With Toyota and PPI Motorsports, his Class 1 and stadium trucks often sported a white base with a yellow, orange, and red tricolor. The design was created by Rollin “Molly” Sanders for Toyota Racing Development USA, who applied it to all of their factory teams from sports cars to open-wheelers. For Stewart, his TRD trucks became an off-road racing icon in the 1980s and ’90s.

The livery is still used on occasion by various Toyota drivers, albeit primarily as throwback schemes.

“I’ve always been a big fan of the Retro Toyota TRD Design from Ivan Stewart, and everyone who follows the Baja Racing a bit closer knows just what a legend he is,” wrote Schwarz. “So to run this livery in Saudi Arabia is very special and I can’t wait to go flat out with it in the Dessert [sic].”

Schwarz’s father Armin used to be a factory driver for Toyota’s WRC division. Since that team was European, however, their cars did not use the TRD USA look and instead opted for the green, red, and white Castrol design.
