Ken Block’s Gymkhana is to rally as Guillaume de Mévius’ Azimut is to rally raid.
It’s certainly a bold comparison, but it also seems to be the nexus for de Mévius’ latest project. On Wednesday, he posted the first episode of his new series Azimut.
The pilot is framed around a simple question: what if a rally raid, in this case the Dakar Rally, took place in de Mévius’ home country of Belgium? To answer this question, he takes a homemade buggy resembling a T3 car around various places in the Belgian countryside including West Flanders, Assesse, and Namur.
The project had taken months to develop, from building the buggy to filming over the summer and fall. It certainly helped that de Mévius had a five-month break from the South African Safari Rally and Rallye du Maroc (he did not run the W2RC race in Portugal) with sporadic starts in between like the Baja TT Sharish Gin.
He had also been busy locking down a deal to acquire the KTM X-Bow.
