As announced in November, the 2026 Hellas Rally Raid will be the first with a separate category for vintage motorcycles. Organizers released the guidelines for them on Saturday, which includes splitting into three divisions based on engine displacement.

The bikes will be divided into classes of up to 450cc, 750cc, and 1200cc. Naturally, they must also be built before 2000.

They must have valid registration and documentation, though special vintage license plates are fine if they comply with street laws.

The rulebook also notes that “well maintained or reconstructed bikes for Vintage events should use still existing components of the relevant category.” Of course, not every part will be available since it’s been so long since the manufacturer last made them.

As such, some parts like the mudguards and throttle don’t have to be the same as on the original model. Modern handguards may be used while folding footrests are “advised.” The exhaust system can also be re-routed to accommodate extra fuel tanks. Some modernization in the name of safety will be allowed, like current-day headlights and braking systems.

Bikes that rely on fuel injection are permitted too, as long as they were homologated prior to 2000. Carburetors must have sliders matching the year that the bike was made.

As of this article’s publication, two are signed up on classic bikes: Konstantinos Lemonis’ Honda Africa Twin 750 and Christos Pelousis’ Suzuki DR750Z.

  1. This is a great development for the vintage rally scene. The breakdown by displacement classes makes a lot of sense, and the balance they are striking between preserving authenticity and allowing safety upgrades seems well thought out. The Africa Twin 750 and the DR750Z are both iconic machines, and it will be brilliant to see them out on the course. Hopefully this encourages more riders to dust of their classic bikes and enter.

  2. Including vintage bikes pre-2000 in the Hellas Rally Raid is a fantastic idea for the adventure rally scene. The class breakdown by 450, 750, and 1200cc gives a sensible structure that lets different eras of machinery compete on fair terms. Watching vintage enduro machines tackle modern rally stages would make for incredible viewing. This could inspire a lot of classic bike enthusiasts to get back into competitive riding. Excited to see how the first edition goes!
