NORRA announced Saturday that Baja legend Johnny Campbell will serve as the grand marshal for the Mexican 1000 in May.

“Johnny Campbell represents everything NORRA stands for: heritage, perseverance, and a deep respect for Baja,” race director Eliseo Garcia stated. “Having him as Grand Marshal is more than an honor. It’s a celebration of one of the greatest to ever race down the peninsula.”

Campbell is an 11-time Baja 1000 overall winner, winning for bikes from 1997 to 2005 and again in 2007 and 2008. He also has five Baja 500s, seven San Felipe 250s, and four Vegas to Reno victories, among many other achievements. This also extended to 11 SCORE bike titles, four Best In The Desert, and a multitude of championships in AMA District 37 across several disciplines.

A longtime Honda partner, he also raced the Paris–Dakar Rally in 2001 and the South America-era Dakar in 2013. He finished eighth at the former, the best run for a privateer.

While his racing days are behind him, Campbell currently runs JCR Honda. His son Preston starred in the desert for the team before becoming a Honda factory rally raider.

He was inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2018.
