For 2027, the Africa Eco Race will simplify its bike categories while dividing the SSVs into two.
The AER, like most rallies, usually separates motorcycles into categories based on engine displacement. At the 2026 race, there were four bike classes: 450cc, Over 450cc, Over 650cc, and Electric. 300cc and Over 300cc divisions also existed for less powerful models.
Starting next year, however, the bikes will instead be split into just single-cylinder and multi-cylinder classes. Although the latter is typically faster, the single-cylinder of Thomas Marini led the bike overall for much of January’s AER before mechanical issues took him out.
Meanwhile, SSV will be divided into 80-liter and 100-liter fuel tank subcategories. Although side-by-sides also include T3 and T4 cars, SSV is its own class as all three are grouped together in the larger Auto rankings with cars.
The AER called the move “a more refined distinction within categories, directly linked to the technical specifications of the vehicles” and is “to better reflect the technical and sporting realities.”
SSV and Bikes will also have refuel services and are required to have ERTF or Marlink tracking.
