Henry Favre was the fan favorite at the Dakar Classic in January, having decided to show up in a Mitsubishi Delica. The race was brutal from start to finish, doubly so for the guy racing a minivan, but the result was never his and navigator Alessandro Iacovelli’s goal as they just wanted to have fun.
Now, that minivan is up for sale. Favre announced Thursday that he is selling the Delica—nicknamed “Truciolo”—to help fund another long-term project he has in mind. His asking price is €24,000 but he joked that he’s open to bartering for “things more valuable that’ll allow me to make more money.” Consequently, he won’t be at the 2027 Classic.
After making their Dakar Classic debut in 2025 in a Pajero, Favre and Iacovelli acquired the Delica over the following spring. Favre, a journalist with quite a sense of humor, had the gall to wait until April Fool’s Day to announce his 2026 Dakar project so that everyone would think it’s a joke before realizing the next day that he was fully serious.
While it may seem absurd to show up to Dakar with a minivan (and it is), the Delica actually has a history there. Team Kozure Okami used a Delica as a support vehicle at the 1984 and 1985 Paris–Dakar Rallies, though it was actually an L300 body built atop a Pajero frame. In 2007, Mitsubishi Ralliart deployed a purpose-built Delica D:5 with the same role.
Of course, Favre doesn’t have the factory backing of either of those teams. He and Iacovelli gutted the interior and installed the necessary parts, including a 1.2-liter Fiat FIRE engine. They even slapped on Ralliart parody decals labeled “Oratorio” (since Favre compared them to driving a van used by church choirs, or oratories), a snowboard for a rear wing, and Toy Story protagonist Woody and six Nokia 3310s as nerf bars.
They didn’t stand much of a chance in the Classic itself. Just one day in, they lost their food and passports because they forgot to close the sliding door and their bags fell out. The duo often exceeded the maximum points permitted too.
Still, it mattered little to either of them. After Stage 6, Favre made a passionate declaration that he was “here to tell stories, have fun, entertain you, and try to get you involved in this motorsport made up entirely of officials and mega-sponsors, where people put on a polo shirt and are convinced they’re the driver of whatever-the-fuck-I-know-about race.” Indeed, they spent as much time helping other competitors in trouble.
By the end, they finished 69th (nice) for cars and 90th overall. The latter made the Delica the 2026 Classic’s final finisher.
While the darling of the bivouac and the fans back home, the van has mostly gone unused since. Favre quipped “the only dust we wanted to kick up is of the desert, not a garage.” Thus, after a “tune-up and a new Arbre Magique (Little Trees air freshener)”, it’s back in rally condition for whoever wants it.
“Give me 24,000 one-euro coins, and it’s yours,” Favre remarked. “The only guarantee we give is that it’s no longer under warranty.”
