Snowmobiles made a triumphant, and painful, return to the Winter X Games in January after five years away. Unfortunately, it appears that was just a one-off.

The Aspen Daily News reported on Wednesday that snowmobile events won’t be on the 2027 slate because the organizers are focusing on skiing and snowboarding, which are the only two disciplines in the X Games League’s winter leg. X Games CEO Jeremy Bloom stressed in an email to the newspaper that their exclusion “doesn’t mean snowmobile can’t return to X Games in the future, but it won’t be part of the Aspen 2027 program.”

New for 2026, the X Games League follows a similar model to stick-and-ball sports by having teams, a draft, and several events across the year. The league made its debut at June’s Summer X Games in Sacramento followed by two more stops in Chiba and New Orleans. Aspen, the annual host of the Winter Games, will kick off the 2027 winter season on January 29–31 followed by rounds in Calgary (February 29–21) and Ruka (April 9–11). The winter draft is scheduled for Wednesday evening.

With the league taking up Bloom and his team’s time and resources, they’d like to ensure those go without a hitch before adding anything else. This was further affirmed while meeting with the Pitkin Board of County Commissioners to give the permit application for the 2027 X Games, where X Games senior director of live events Jeff Hermanek spoke of “want(ing) to make sure that we’re focusing on those particular sports.”

After last appearing in 2020, snowmobiles returned for the 2026 Games with Freestyle and Speed & Style events. Brandon Cormier and Marcus Ohlsson were hospitalized after crashing in the former but have since recovered, while the latter was eventually changed to just one-on-one races because of wind.
