Sébastien Loeb and Molly Taylor will not be the only rally raiders at the Race of Champions in March as Toby Price has thrown his hat into the ring, representing the host country Australia.
The ROC announced Price’s addition to the roster on Tuesday, while Price was in Saudi Arabia preparing for his first Dakar Rally in a car.
“We have been flat out getting everything together for Dakar and I received a call from Fredrik (Johnsson, ROC president) out of the blue about being a part of the Race of Champions,” Price stated. “ROC is such a cool event and to be a part of the first version in Australia is pretty exciting to be honest and something to look forward to. We have our heads down making sure we head to Dakar as prepared as we possibly can be in what will be our first attempt in a car.”
Price will be making his ROC debut, arriving as a two-time Dakar bike winner and as the 2023 W2RC RallyGP runner-up. His bike rally career ended after the 2024 Dakar, where he finished fifth, to focus on four-wheel racing in SCORE. He and Paul Weel won the Baja 500 en route to finishing 16th in the SCORE Trophy Truck standings.
His truck racing experience also includes three straight Finke Desert Race wins in a Mitsubishi Trophy Truck (he also claimed six victories at Finke on a bike), racing in the Stadium Super Trucks since 2015 and winning in the Boost Mobile Super Trucks, and doing a traditional rally for the first time at the Working Dog Rally in October.
For Dakar, he is driving a Toyota Hilux Overdrive with fellow two-time Dakar bike champ Sam Sunderland as his navigator.
“Toby Price is one of the toughest competitors we have ever seen in any form of world motorsport,” Johnsson added. “His incredible stamina and the pain threshold he has displayed to win Dakar, not once, but twice, is stuff of legend.
“The Australian fans have really embraced him over the years because of his no-nonsense approach to his sport and his ability and willingness to give his time to them. He has proven himself on two wheels and four and I am sure he will be super competitive in front of a home crowd at Accor Stadium.
“We wish him all the best in his new endeavors at Dakar this month and look forward to seeing him fresh ready to go in Sydney, a long way from the Saudi sand dunes.”
Price is not the only 2025 ROC-bound person currently in the Dakar bivouac as Loeb is a four-time ROC champion who will race the Dacia Sandrider. Fellow Australian Molly Taylor ran her only Dakar to date in 2023.
Others who have competed in rally raid and ROC include Fernando Alonso, Miki Biasion, Carlos Checa, Guerlain Chicherit, Mattias Ekström, Robby Gordon, Juha Kankkunen, Colin McRae, Stéphane Peterhansel, Nelson Piquet Jr., Nani Roma, Carlos Sainz, Timo Salonen, Kenjiro Shinozuka, Dani Sordo, Ari Vatanen, Giniel de Villiers, and Björn Waldegård. Ekström, who is racing a Ford Raptor at the 2025 Dakar, is a four-time ROC winner after claiming the latest edition in 2023.
The 2025 ROC will take place on March 7–8.
