Ahead of the 2025 season, SCORE International has created another Trophy Truck category exclusively for two-wheel-drive trucks.

It is the fourth different Trophy Truck class alongside the standalone TT, TT Legends, and TT Spec. For qualifying, 2WD will be grouped alongside TT and Legends while Spec continues to qualify on its own. Like how Legends drivers have an “L” affixed to their number to differentiate themselves from Trophy Truck, TT 2WD entrants will have a “T” at the end (for example, #46T).

Most regulations remain the same between TT and 2WD save for the obvious difference of the latter being exclusively for two-wheel-drive trucks. Thus, 2WD truck drivers can still compete in the main Trophy Truck class if they wish.

From an instant reaction, the new class garnered mixed reception from fans and drivers. On one hand, it provides a level playing field where 2WD trucks compete against those of the same drivetrain instead of being routinely outclassed by AWD models.

Critics feel it’s an unnecessary addition to an already bloated pool of categories, especially since 2WD can still race in TT. Some think the trucks are due for a restructuring anyway, or that a 2WD class makes more sense than one like TT Legends, which is reserved for drivers over 50.

“I have been against this but now it’s here,” commented TT driver Cameron Steele. “I feel like there are trucks and drivers that will race 2WD that would not race against the big money AWD teams. It may bring some trucks.

“Spec is spec, there are some really fast drivers but in Baja it’s still a sub class. Mixing specs going 40mph slower in some cases is a no go no matter how they qualify on a 5 mile redirect every 150 yards with no top speed available. Not apples to apples.

“I feel like this could have been avoided more if SCORE would just qualify in segments of the real race course and not some slip and slide silt bed or sandstone hillside course. They say qualifying is not for fans so why does it have to be 4 miles of course in one square mile? Lame.

“Qualify from zoo road crossing to the old mile 23 at highway 5 and this is a different conversation. Yes last year starting 19th we were fast enough to be 3rd overall. Spent 60 miles dealing with slower trucks but once we got to a faster group we ran with them.

“I’m honestly not sure [how I feel about] all this.”

The season begins with the San Felipe 250 in April.
