Romain Dumas and Ford Performance are keen on repeating at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, and will do so with the Super Mustang Mach-E demonstrator.
Of course, it is an actual car as opposed to the SuperVan he raced in 2023 and the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck with which he won the 2024 edition. The Mustang Mach-E is based on the electric crossover SUV produced since 2021.
“After last year’s incredible run with the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck and SuperVan 4.2 before it, I’m honored to be back with Ford to take on this challenge once again,” Dumas said. “This Mach-E is a different beast and we’re excited to see what it can do on the mountain.”
Naturally, the Mustang is lighter than the van and truck with better weight distribution. It features three STARD UHP 6-Phase engines that produce over 1,400 horsepower and receive their power from 50 kWh of Li-polymer NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) pouch cells. STARD also built the powertrain and control system.
The car has a voltage of 799 V like the truck, but is lighter by 260 pounds. The braking system, which delivers 710 kW of regenerative braking, is made from carbon.
The Mustang produces 6,900 pounds of downforce at 150 mph.
“Racing is our test bed,” Ford racing director Mark Rushbrook stated. “Every data point we gather on the mountain helps us build better electric vehicles for our customers, whether it’s maximizing power delivery, improving regen strategies, or managing heat in extreme elevation changes. What we learn here goes straight into future production.”
Dumas is a longtime sports car veteran who’s won the discipline’s biggest events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans and 12 Hours of Sebring. He also has five Pikes Peak titles in 2014, 2016 through 20118, and 2024. The 2018 run, which came in a Volkswagen I.D. R, saw him set the all-time hillclimb record.
