Dakarspeed had one of the more unique trucks at the Dakar Rally, one that combines elements of an International LoneStar and a Scania. Five months after this year’s race, however, the team has sold it off.

The truck is officially called an International Scania LoneStar. It features the nose from a LoneStar, one of the most prominent hauler lines in the United States until its discontinuation in 2024, combined with the engine of a Scania Euro 6.

After last racing in 2022, a three-year delay due to business obligations for owner Maurik van den Heuvel, the team returned to Dakar in 2025. Van den Heuvel was joined by Wilko van Oort and Martijn van Rooij in the cabin, the latter joining Dakarspeed after coming over from fellow Dutch outfit Firemen Dakarteam.

The #615 International Scania LoneStar typically finished in the top ten for trucks each day, placing as high as sixth in Stage 7. However, things took a turn on the third day when bolts for the engine’s cooling fan came off. Disaster then struck the next stage when the gearbox came apart and destroyed the flywheel housing, leaving them stranded in the desert until the team could arrive. The repairs, which included replacing the starter motor in addition to the aforementioned damaged parts, forced them to miss the second leg of the marathon as they used it and the rest day to get it fixed.

The second half of the rally was cleaner and they finished 17th in Truck.

The truck was put up for sale in March.

“With a bit of pain still in my heart, I’m waving you off,” wrote van Rooij on Thursday. “I hope you can shine with your new owner and he treats you well. Maybe we’ll meet again someday.”

Dakarspeed has not revealed their plans for 2026 onward, though van Rooij mentioned he’s “not done with Dakar yet.” Van den Heuvel, who sold his company in November, has expressed interest in doing the Dakar Classic.
