It’s not uncommon for rallies to divide their UTVs into T3 and T4 classes, the former for purpose-built racing side-by-sides and the latter for production models.
The Morocco Desert Challenge is taking things a step further. Besides T3 and T4, the MDC has added SSV Open and SSV Open Light categories. Open Light is for UTVs with a top speed of 120 km/h while Open Light is for 125 km/h. T3 and T4 go even faster at 135 km/h.
With so many Can-Am Mavericks signed up, organizers also created two trophies for the models taking part: the “Can-Am Maverick X3 Cup” and the “Can-Am Maverick R Cup”.
There will also be a T3 Experimental subcategory for light prototypes with engine displacements exceeding 1,000cc. This class is mainly reserved for for Erik Wevers’ Taurus T3 EVO Max, an upgraded version of the usual Taurus cars that uses a 1600cc engine from a Volkswagen Polo GTI Rally2 car.
Of the 155 registrants so far, 52 are UTVs.
Other changes include hiring Sébastien Delaunay to lead the roadbook validation process. He had departed his role as the Carta Rallye and Baja Morocco’s race director on Wednesday.
“Being part of the MDC crew allows me to combine everything I love most: discovering the beauty of the desert, the pleasure of driving and the adventure of major rallies and the incredible vibe this rally is known for,” said Delaunay. “Thanks to my many years of experience as a professional navigator, I have a strong understanding of the speed and performance of modern race vehicles.
“I pay great attention to my routes and roadbooks. This is what I am known for. Safety always remains my top priority. By joining the MDC family, I hope to create new opportunities for the riders.”
