After years of speculation, someone finally has the guts to enter the Cybertruck into an off-road race. On Friday, Chewy B and Anthony Rodriguez will run the Mint 400’s Limited Race in the #EV269 Cybertruck built by Kilowatt Customs and The Baja Shop.

Chewy B oversees Kilowatt Customs, which specializes in customizing electric vehicles for off-roading and other similar builds. One such project that the company and The Baja Shop worked on was converting a Tesla Model 3 into an off-road model called the “Baja E”, which was shown off last year at events like the Sand Sports Super Show and SEMA.

The team also modded another Cybertruck before trying it out in the dunes of Glamis. Even with a stock suspension, they were receptive to how it performed.

While not fully stock, the EV269’s suspension uses stock Tesla air shocks and has a 2.5-inch lift kit from Unplugged Performance. It also features upgraded A-arms and bushings, among other components to ensure the car will survive in the desert. On the top is an aluminum false roof; the team had wanted to install one made of Lexan, but didn’t have enough time to get one on.

The Cybertruck has proven to be a polarizing vehicle for its PS1 graphics-like design and performance. Elon Musk was keen on wanting it to be able to “kick butt in Baja”, as he tweeted in 2020; before his Twitter account was abandoned and hacked, Mint 400 co-owner Matt Martelli told Musk that “Baja is for pussies. Come race @themint400 !!!”

Similarly, Dakar Rally director David Castera noted that Tesla was interested in fielding the Cybertruck in the 2026 Mission 1000. However, that plan ultimately never came to fruition.

The Cybertruck is one of two entries in the EV Open Production class alongside the Chevrolet Silverado EV ZR2 of Gray Leadbetter. Due to electric vehicles not having as much range as their ICE counterparts, this category is only required to run two laps.
