Janey Lee and Kyle Walton are undergoing treatment after their UTV caught fire during San Felipe 250 pre-running on Tuesday. Lee suffered serious burns to her legs and shoulder while Walton has burns to her hands, both of which will require surgeries. Despite their injuries, Lee’s husband Eric noted both are doing well and in good spirits.

Eric Lee, who is also a desert racer and part of his wife’s crew, put out a video on Thursday explaining the incident and the extent of the injuries.

The fire occurred at around 11 AM, starting underneath the driver’s seat while Lee was driving. Walton was able to release Lee’s seatbelts and pull her out. Eric noted that her gloves and helmet skirt were able to protect Janey’s head and hands while she and the car were engulfed in flames.

“Kylie saved Janey’s life,” Eric said.

Racers like Jason Cobb and Tyler Lynn stopped to administer help while Brad Bauder and Cody Johnson assisted in bringing them to the helicopter. Terrible Herbst Motorsports sent their plane to fly them to San Diego. Others like Steve Menzies, Kelly Louch, and the Ampudia family were also involved in the getting them to safety.

Lee has extensive burns to her legs, the left in particular being “burned pretty bad”, as well as her shoulder. As such, she will require skin grafts for the shoulder and several procedures for the legs. Eric called her “a trooper and she’s in good spirits.”

Walton’s hands will also need surgeries, Eric mentioning “she’s in good spirits too. The girls are tough. They really are.” Both will have their first surgery on Friday.
