The Africa Eco Race’s Raid program is designed to offer a no-stakes rally raid experience for those new to the sport. For 2027, it will be split into two categories with differing levels of intensity.
Raid Travel is the original package. Intended for people with no rally raid background whatsoever and adventure enthusiasts, participants will follow the AER’s route with guidance of instructors in a safe and structured environment. There are also introductory classes for roadbook navigation, though they are optional.
Raid Evolution, on the other hand, is the middle ground between Travel and the AER itself. Participants in this category must must attend all pre-stage briefings and respect start times, while going on sections used by either the Africa Eco Race itself or its AER Historic counterpart. While one won’t be timed as Raid is still non-competition, this is for those wanting to truly get the rally experience but aren’t comfortable yet to go head-to-head with everyone else.
Because it’s far more demanding, Raid Evolution applicants must undergo an approval process by race organizers. If it proves to be too much, one can switch back to Raid Travel at any time or it will be done so automatically if race officials feel you are struggling.
Including both categories, 40 entrants (20 cars and 20 bikes) are permitted in total.
“Since its introduction to the Africa Eco Race 15 years ago, the Raid has always aimed to allow everyone to experience the adventure of rally raid from the inside, without the pressure of the clock,” reads a statement from the AER.
“In 2027, the Raid is evolving to offer experiences tailored to every profile: clearer, more immersive… and designed to meet every desire for adventure.”
