Stéphane Peterhansel is a man who needs zero introduction. The greatest Dakarian in history with 14 overall wins, six of which came on a bike before earning eight more on four wheels. Even into his sixties, he’s competing for championships in the W2RC’s Stock category.
In recognition of his bike successes, he will be inducted into the FIM Hall of Fame on November 13. The HOF is part of the Racing Motorcycle Museum, located in Mies at the old FIM headquarters.
Three years after his debut, Peterhansel won the 1991 Paris–Dakar Rally on a Yamaha YZE750T. That bike, complete with the #80 numberplate and Pioneer and Michelin decals, is currently at the Racing Motorcycle Museum.
He went on to win again in 1992 and 1993 on a YZE805T (now on display at Trail 70), then added three more bike victories in 1995, 1997, and 1998. Peterhansel switched to driving the following year and secured an additional eight overall victories.
Now driving for Defender Rally, he finished runner-up in the World Rally-Raid Championship’s Stock category to Rokas Baciuška. While four wheels has been his focus, he occasionally returns to motorcycle racing with Yamaha such as the Swank Rally, Africa Eco Race, and FIM Enduro Vintage Trophy.
Although Mr. Dakar is best known for his rally successes, he also won the 1997 and 2001 FIM World Enduro Championships in 250cc two- and four-stroke, respectively. His Yamaha WR250 is also at the RMM.
The FIM Hall of Fame inducted its inaugural class at the RMM’s opening last December with Giacomo Agostini, Carmelo Espeleta, Harry Everts, and Sammy Miller.
