After a tumultuous four-year stint with WRC Promoter’s subsidiary, the FIA has taken as the promoter for the World and European Rallycross Championships. Per a statement released Monday, the federation’s control takes effect immediately.
While the FIA has sanctioned World RX since inception in 2014, promotional and organizational duties initially began with IMG’s racing division. Despite having a contract that was to run for 20 years, IMG departed after the 2020 season marred by the COVID-19 pandemic. WRC Promoter GmbH, which runs the World Rally Championship, took over for 2021 with its Rallycross Promoter division.
Rallycross Promoter oversaw the series’ switch to electric cars and the eventual reintegration of ICE cars as part of the “Battle of Technologies” that debuted in 2024. The final season under Rallycross Promoter spanned five countries and ended with Johan Kristoffersson claiming his seventh title. WRC Promoter ended its World RX involvement at season’s end.
The FIA began looking for a replacement right away, though the four months since bore little fruit that tickled the federation’s fancy. Ultimately, president Mohammed Ben Sulayem decided to take over the series himself. Still, the FIA intends to have a to-be-named service provider helping out.
“The FIA is making an investment not only in rallycross, but in the future of our sport,” said Sulayem. “We are fully committed to take this category to the next level by securing new global audiences, delivering the opportunity for an improved competition for the drivers, teams, our commercial partners, and crucially the fans.
“When I was elected, I pledged to deliver strong regulations and a stronger FIA, building an essential foundation for the success of motorsport at every level. Securing the future growth of our World Championships reflects my commitment to do just this.”
The Battle of Technologies will for 2025.
