For nearly two decades, the Baja 1000 has started and finished in Ensenada and/or La Paz. In 2026, Los Cabos wants to do the honors.

In a meeting on Monday, the Los Cabos City Council agreed to make a push to become the host city for the 2026 Baja 1000. As part of their proposal, the race would be a loop with Cabos as the start and finish line.

“The Baja 1000 is an international competition that brings together racers not only from the United States and Mexico but from many parts of the world,” explained Los Cabos councilman Celestino Atienzón Beltrán. “The fact that this race can be, as I understand it, held in Los Cabos and start and finish in Los Cabos as well is a historic moment. It will be the first time this happens, and it will surely highlight and place Los Cabos once again in the eyes of many parts of the world because of such an important event.”

Los Cabos is located at the southernmost tip of Baja California. Cabo San Lucas, the municipality’s largest city, was the site of the 2000 and 2007 race finishes. The 2000 race was especially long compared to other editions at 1,726 miles long and officially called the Baja 2000 to celebrate the new millennium.

Otherwise, SCORE typically has its four races run through Ensenada and La Paz. Ensenada is where SCORE’s main offices are based.

Given the Baja 1000’s prestige, the Council also agreed it would be a massive boon for tourism to the area. Besides providing an economic boost for Los Cabos, council members asserted it would extend to the rest of Baja California Sur.

SCORE released the 2026 calendar in July but did not state a location for the Baja 1000. The San Felipe 250 will remain in its namesake town, while the Baja 500 and Baja 400 are in Ensenada.

The sanctioning body has not confirmed if Cabo will host next year’s 1000, which is scheduled for November 9–15.
