North Carolina Manufacturing in Swepsonville is where Honda’s ATVs and various power equipment are produced. On Tuesday, American Honda announced the factory will receive a $9.658 billion investment to modernize the facilities and create 18 more jobs.

With the boost, NCM will be able to make more parts in house such as fenders, side covers, toolbox covers, and other items for the FourTrax and TRX lines. Employees can also undergo upskilling over the next five years.

Additionally, NCM is investing into a new plastic pelletizer to reuse scraps and waste.

“By equipping Honda North Carolina Manufacturing with important new capabilities to build key parts for our products right here at the facility, we can continue growing our ATV business in North Carolina,” NCM site lead Lynne Hedrick stated. “We are grateful for the continued support from Alamance County and look forward to the benefits this investment will provide to our associates and the region.”

North Carolina Manufacturing opened in 1984 as Honda Power Equipment Manufacturing Inc., a 60 thousand-square-foot plant built on $10 million to produce lawnmowers. HPE chose the site since customer demand for lawnmowers was high on the East Coast and Alamance County was more than happy to accept the new business. Mowers are still made at NCM today such as the ProZision ZTR, which is expected to be released in summer 2026.

As the decades passed, the factory grew in size to its current size of 650 thousand square feet with 600 workers. An R&D center for power equipment opened in 1993. Besides mowers, the power equipment side also makes snowblowers, engines, and generators.

ATV production was moved from South Carolina Manufacturing in Timmonsville to Swepsonville in July 2023. SCM nowadays specializes in UTVs and made its 500,000th unit in August.

“We are excited to see continued growth and innovation by companies whose legacy is firmly here in Alamance County,” Alamance chamber board chair Ryan Moffitt offered. “Honda North Carolina Manufacturing is a fine example of investment in place that is furthering the future of business for our community.”
