When the Baja 500 takes place in June, teams will have to get used to not seeing the familiar white-blue-red truck and tent of BFGoodrich when they refuel.
The tire supplier had its own pit areas at desert races for nearly five decades, but will no longer offer them as teams begin to set up their own pit areas. Other companies offer the service too like Amigos, Baja Pits, Baja Desert Pits, and Mag 7.
“After nearly 50 years of serving the racing community in Baja with the BFGoodrich Pit Support Program, the decision has been made to discontinue the service,” reads a joint statement from Raymond Cotton, Nate Hunt, and Monica Davis. Cotton is the head of parent company Michelin’s North American racing division, while Hunt and Davis are respectively the sales and marketing managers for BFG.
“To teams that used pit support: We know this change might be tough to process. The decision wasn’t an easy one to make. Five decades ago, reliable pit support was hard to come by, and BFGoodrich capably filled that void for race teams of all sizes and classes. Today, most teams have their own pit support, tailored to their drivers’ exact needs. With that, participation in the BFGoodrich Pit Support Program has steadily dwindled.
“We are evolving with the times but not going away. Motorsports always has been and always will be in BFGoodrich’s DNA. We remain committed to racers and the off-road community, and BFGoodrich’s presence will still be felt in Baja.”
SCORE’s season-opening San Felipe 250 in March had a single BFG pit at RM 140.34.
While the official pit will no longer be available, BFG still plans to offer interim support for frequent customers like $1 per race mile for those who join the aforementioned alternative pit providers. BFG will also continue to be a close partner of SCORE and help with logistics.
“Thank you to all the race teams who have supported and used this legendary program,” the letter concludes.
“A very special thank you to the pit crew members and volunteers over the years for your invaluable contributions to the BFGoodrich Pit Support Program and to Baja racing. You will forever be a part of this legacy of greatness.”
