The official story trailer for Star Wars: Galactic Racer was released on Friday as part of the Summer Game Fest.
It’s already known that the campaign mode will follow Shade, though the trailer provides more insight into his goals and the Galactic League. The series was founded by Darius Pax, who feuds with champion Kestar Bool as the latter flexes his titles to gain influence within the league.
Pax recruits Shade, described as a “mysterious pilot with a personal grudge against the Bool family”, to compete in the league and take down Kestar. Sebulba, the podracing antagonist from The Phantom Menace, is suggested to be a mentor of sort to Shade. Hibi, an engineer, will also offer support to Shade like new parts.
The trailer introduces a new track on the planet of Derven Acos while confirming a return to Mos Eisley, site of the Mos Espa Circuit and the Boonta Eve Classic as depicted in Episode I. One racer is seen wearing a customized TIE pilot helmet that looks like Griff Halloran’s from Star Wars Resistance; while Halloran’s presence wasn’t directly confirmed in the trailer, he and the other main characters in Resistance moonlight as racers and is thus highly likely the man shown.
A release by Fuse Studios also describes the story mode’s format. The player selects an event and must complete every goal to progress. If they crash out too many times, they must restart from the beginning of the challenge. Only certain benefits from previous runs are carried over into the next.
Podracing can also be unlocked quickly by entering the Arcade Mode.
The trailer was one of two Star Wars projects shown during the Summer Game Fest alongside Zero Company, a turn-based tactical combat game similar to XCOM or Girls’ Frontline 2 that releases on August 27. Galactic Racer will come out on October 6.
Two other trailers are also available: the teaser from The Game Awards (hosted by the same organizer as SGF) in December and the initial gameplay video from February.
