Travis Pastrana didn’t race Global Rallycross when the series was at RFK Stadium in 2014, but he’ll still get to do something motorsports-y in the nation’s capital.
On June 13, he will attempt a backflip across the South Lawn of the White House on his KTM 250 SX. The stunt was organized by Nitro Circus in partnership with UFC, who has the UFC Freedom 250 the following day. Nitro Circus is majority owned by Thrill One, which has UFC owner Dana White as an investor.
The UFC event, intended to celebrate the United States’ 250th birthday, has been polarizing since the moment it was revealed. Critics feel an MMA fight in front of the White House is overly tacky or an unnecessary sideshow amid ongoing controversies surrounding Donald Trump’s administration. A federal lawsuit has also been filed requesting a temporary restraining order to keep the event from taking place, citing violations of federal law by organizing professional sports events on public property and building the arena—one that Trump teased could be permanent and compared to the Eiffel Tower—without Congressional approval.
In an interview with the Capital Gazette, Pastrana stressed that he tries to avoid politics and wanted to do the stunt solely because performing at the White House is a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”. Pastrana himself is from Annapolis a short distance away from DC.
The stunt entails jumping over the UFC octagon, nicknamed “The Claw”. The ramps being brought over from Pastranaland will be raised to ensure that Pastrana can clear the octagon while still ensuring a picturesque shot of the White House.
With the jump being on Saturday, Pastrana will have to miss the Southern Ohio Forest Rally since it clashes with the latter’s final day. He currently leads the American Rally Association’s national standings with just 38 points to Mark Piatkowski’s 33, so he’ll likely lose the top spot barring disaster for the latter.
“This is such an honor that I’m skipping the Southern Ohio rally event, which could cost me the season championship,” Pastrana told the Capital Gazette. “Subaru wasn’t thrilled, but they understood. There is a chance to still win the championship.”
