The Glickenhaus SCG 008 started as an April Fool’s joke. Now, it’s got a race record and could very well be a Dakar Rally entrant in the future.
In April and May, Glickenhaus brought the SCG 008 out to Baja to compete in the Mexican 1000. The team’s off-road director and Sonora Rally boss Darren Skilton drove the car, while Dakar Rally alumnus and 131 Off-Road friend Willem Avenant was his navigator.
On Friday, Avenant released a 31-minute video following the team’s exploits in Baja. It starts as far back as him meeting Skilton and the team and goes all the way to the finish in Cabo.
“This isn’t a highlight reel of a perfect run, it’s raw footage of what real rally-raid development looks like: improvised repairs on the side of the track, willpower over breakdowns, and the ‘Happiest Race on Earth’ living up to its brutal reputation,” reads the video description.
The SCG 008 is mainly optimized for rallies like Dakar, and the team hopes it could be able to run it someday. In the meantime, NORRA made for a good test ground in racing conditions.
Despite struggling with serpentine belt and brake failures, they managed to reach the finish second in Evolution Rally Car (88th overall).
With NORRA out of the way, Glickenhaus’ current focus is on testing the hydrogen-based HFC Boot. The plan remains to enter it at the Baja 1000 in November.
