While mainly known for its sports car projects, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus’ SCG 008 is a prototype off-road car that’s legal to compete in SCORE and the Dakar Rally. In May, the 008 will make its NORRA debut at the Mexican 1000.

“We will be racing our 008 at NORRA,” team boss Jim Glickenhaus said on Friday night. “It’s a great desert racer and pre-runner.”

The SCG 008 is a three-seat prototype powered by a 6.2-liter GM LS3 engine. It is based on the SCG 004 sports car, which also has three seats and roughly the same carbon fiber body. Likewise, much of the team’s racing endeavors have been in sports car racing like the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

However, SCG has also been developing off-road vehicles like the SCG Boot based on Steve McQueen’s Chevrolet Baja Boot. The team is also working on a hydrogen fuel cell version called the HFC Boot, which they hoped to debut at the San Felipe 250 in March but couldn’t make it in time.

In a way, NORRA is a middle ground between Dakar and SCORE. The Mexican 1000 is a rally like the former, but goes through the same environment as the latter and at lower stakes.

UPDATE (May 6): The article initially described the SCG 004 as a kit car rather than a DOT-approved, turnkey vehicle. The 008 was initially going to be sold without the engine, but that differs from the 004 being called a kit car.
