The World Motor Sport Council approved Monday the creation of two roadmaps for the Ultimate and Challenger categories that will culminate in their full rollout by the 2030 W2RC season.

“Ultimate 2030” will focus on installing a new fuel cell built by the FIA, increased protection and cockpit space, and ways to implement alternative power sources like hydrogen and electric power. Even with these additions, the goal remains to continue using the T1 formula with a front engine and four-wheel drive.

Development of the new Ultimate cars will begin in 2027 before the rulebook is finalized a year later. They will then compete in the new Experimental Group in 2029 before becoming mandatory for factory drivers in 2030. The new regulations will span tne years.

On the T3 side, “Challenger 2029” will mandate closed cockpits and turbocharged engines up to 1,620cc. Rules will be drawn up in 2027 before they debut in 2028, then become eligible for racing—but not required—in 2029.

Other changes approved by the WMSC include adding logos to cars denoting a driver’s priority status and removing the tiered penalty system.
