Paul Weel is calling time on his SCORE racing, at least on a full-time basis. He announced Monday that he will no longer compete for the championship, but is open to returning on occasion for races like the Baja 1000.
2026 has been a difficult and transformative year for Weel. He began the season as Team Australia alongside Toby Price, but their disqualification from the San Felipe 250 resulted in significant fallout that included Price’s own departure from desert racing and the team’s reformation as Paul Weel Motorsport.
Rob MacCachren joined the new-look outfit for the Baja 500 as they debuted the Gen-2 AWD Trophy Truck from Mason Motorsports, but they retired due to a mechanical failure.
The truck has since been sold to Bryce Menzies (who also has his own second-generation Mason) and is expected to be driven by Andy McMillin from this point on. Meanwhile, MacCachren has reunited with Luke McMillin’s #83 team; the tandem has won the Baja 1000 overall three times in the last five years.
Weel had been racing SCORE since 2022, winning the 2024 Baja 500 with Price.
“This journey has been everything I could have hoped for and more,” said Weel.. I think about 2022, standing on the side of the course watching our truck burn to the ground. I think about leading the Baja 1000 with just 51 miles to go, only for the fuel to run out before we could see the finish line. Moments that broke my heart, but never once broke my spirit. And then I think about crossing the line first at the 2024 Baja 500, a feeling that made every single one of those hard moments worth it. That is what motorsport is. It gives and it takes, and it never apologises for either.”
