Honda Racing Corporation USA has officially unveiled the Honda Passport Baja Spec Trophy Truck, which the company touts as the culmination of their work into a single desert truck. Bryce Menzies will debut it at the 2027 Baja 500.
The most notable feature is its hybrid technology. On one side is an aluminum 2.4-liter twin-turbo V6 engine based on the Acura AR24e engine used in the Acura ARX-06 GTP car. The ICE works in tandem with a bespoke 800-volt hybrid-electric system to produce over 1,300 horsepower. The hybrid power unit comes with an F1-style battery pack.
Mason Motorsports, whose Gen-2 truck is currently used by Menzies, supplied the Masomatic five-speed transmission and differential. Said truck’s chassis is used in the Passport as well.
It also comes with an all-wheel-drive transaxle that can send torque through dual rear driveshafts into high pinion spiral bevel gears at each wheel, breaking from the usual ring-and-pinion setup.
The carbon-fiber body was made using advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics to optimize airflow.
“The Honda Passport Baja Spec represents HRC’s determination to push the boundaries of Baja desert racing, the ultimate test of off-road performance and durability,” HRC USA president Kelvin Fu stated. “We incorporated knowledge and technology from across global Honda racing programs to create the Honda Passport Baja Spec, a bold new approach to desert racing, and HRC is excited to show the world what it can do.
“The Honda Passport Baja Spec is essentially a software-defined vehicle. Using proprietary HRC software, the truck integrates powertrain, chassis and energy management systems into a single software-defined platform that can be upgraded continuously during the race and tuned to the driver, course and race conditions.”
The new Passport is significantly different from the Honda Baja Passport that Ethan Ebert raced until 2025. That model was fielded by Honda Off-Road Factory Racing in the 2WD Trophy Truck class and had a 550-horsepower engine.
